OVERVIEW:
In the later half of the 1980s, there were only a small number of heavy metal bands in the Carolinas, even fewer of which were thrash and crossover bands such as AFTERMATH A.D., MESSIAH, and SEDUCER. This would slowly change as the decade progressed, with the emergence of bands such as DENIAL, BLOODY MARY, and FALSE PROPHET onto the scene.
One of those earliest bands would come from the unlikely small Eastern North Carolina town of Goldsboro.
KURUPSURE began in the Fall of 1987 with guitarists Chuck Meyer and Rick Balliot. The following year, the line-up was completed with the addition of rhythm section bassist Scott Ervin and drummer Jim Ellis.
Taking inspiration from heavyweights such as BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, and METALLICA, the quartet set out to create progressive-power-thrash metal, which was growing in popularity within the underground heavy metal scene at the time.
KURUPSURE's socially conscious lyrics and DIY approach would add to their credibility as a serious band. Combining technical riffing with hardcore grooves created a crossover sound that would set the band apart from their local peers.
In 1989 the band went into CMC Studios and recorded a 3-song demo that included “Hello, Cruel World”, “Chemical Dependency” and “The Unfortunate”. This demo would be used to shop around to local clubs in order to get the band’s gigs. Later that same year KURUPSURE would record a second 2 -song demo at Duckee Studios that included the songs “Administering Punishment”,and “The Damned”.
Although KURUPSURE would be short-lived, the band's place in N.C. 's metal history deserves to be highlighted.
Heaven and Hell Records have gathered some of the recordings of this forgotten pionering band of N.C. 's heavy metal scene. Only a few demo tracks exist, and some live soundboard recordings that have been cleaned up using the best possible sources for a limited compilation CD release.
